Chefchaouen III

Sunday, February 27, 2011

In the morning we hiked up into the hills high above the city. We were among people herding their goats and sheep, but it was mostly men on the trail.

We assumed they were traveling, not hiking. It felt great to be moving and to be in such fresh air. We couldn’t believe our fortune with the weather, which was lovely.

This is where women wash their clothes, although we also saw a few washing directly in the creek.

This is a view of Chefchaouen from the hill we climbed.

Today we saw a lot more tourists, but we’ve had a very pleasant experience with the vendors. They’re so un-pushy that I’m not worried about returning their “bon jour”s.

Our hotel is very pleasant. These are views from our room and roof terrace.

We seem to be the only Americans among Spaniards. The place is lovely, with many nice touches, and with steep steps up to our third-floor room. We have enjoyed the terace, which overlooks the city. Breakfasts are fresh-squeezed orange juice (yum) and self-toasted bread with jams, goat cheese, olive oil, and pureed tomatoes. I brought an avocado to slice up and top my bread, to which I added the refreshing tomato. Ripe avocados can be found in the markets. They’re not super cheap, but for me they’re essential.
