Chefchaouen II

We dropped off our things and wandered the streets. This place is lovely. There are maybe three shades of blue throughout – doors, frames, bars, awning brackets – washed or deeply saturated with any of the blues. One could spend an eternity snapping photos.

The pigments used here are sold in powder form at several little stores. (Oops. Describing a store as "little" here is redundant. They're all tiny.) The deep blue comes from a rock in the Atlas Mountains.

In the afternoon we saw a democracy protest.

There were lots of people sitting and standing in a circle with statements covering their mouths and written on signs in their hands. They passed around a candle and used it to light one in front of them. They are asking for democracy and jobs, and holding peaceful demonstrations every Sunday, according to our hotelier. The signs were in Arabic so we couldn’t understand them.
